Jews in Alabama, Episode #45

A special Election Night episode. Before we get to the electoral stuff, we play some voice comments left by nice listeners. These include a comment from Alan, calling Eric out on an insensitive comment he made on episode #44. Jen calls and wants to know about the Birmingham Jewish community's attitude towards Halloween, and we discuss. We talk about this week's Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror" episode, including "Operation: Enduring Occupation" and the blatant Iraq reference that was removed. Finally, we get to the election night goodness, and we play a voice comment and a "California Election Update" from Ashley and Anthony from the Dixiecast, then discuss the national and Alabama races. 48 minutes, 23 seconds.

Jews in Alabama, Episode #44

On tonight's Sophie-free (she's sleeping!) episode, we recount our recent weekends with the Kentuck Festival of the Arts, a pumpkin-carving that wasn't, the Vulgar Bulgars, and our temple gala. We talk about the execution of Danny Rolling in Florida, and then get into political stuff with the Dixie Chicks, the Michael J. Fox/Rush Limbaugh thing, John Kerry's comments (and Keith Olbermann's astute observations), and Election Day next week -- VOTE!!! We mention some other random stuff, plug the AndyCast, and play "Ot Azoi" by the Vulgar Bulgars on the way out. 55 minutes, 7 seconds.

A Birmingham Muslim has ties to Hamas, and we discuss the ramifications. Plus, Netanyahu says Diaspora Jewry is doomed -- is this true?? We talk about a parenting book we want to read, play a voicemail, and give some shoutouts. 34 minutes, 44 seconds.

Jews in Alabama, Episode #42 (The Meaning of Life)

Since this is episode #42, we start out by paying homage to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. We talk about our Rosh Hashanah experience, including tashlich. We plug the Dixiecast, and talk a little bit about this week's controversy with Apple claiming the word "podcast," Leo Laporte's suggested alternative, and then find out that Apple really wasn't doing any such thing. Raya talks about her shiny new car, and Eric explains how we kind of shafted CarMax. Finally, we discuss the MTV reality show "Two-A-Days," featuring a local high school football team, and the controversy surrounding the chaplain in their locker room. 46 minutes, seven seconds.

Jews in Alabama, Episode #41

On tonight's show, we avoid political talk -- no mention of Joe Lieberman!!! We talk about the upcoming High Holidays, and what it's like to work at a shul this time of year. We also talk about 2004 in Birmingham, "the year there was no Rosh Hashanah." We play our very first audio comment ever, and plug our new comment line, as well as the Dinkycast. We discuss Danny Siegel (ziv.org) and his Selichot visit to Birmingham this weekend; we also talk about our new neighbors, our Labor Day visitors, Eric's trip to Vegas, and what Raya and Sophie did to entertain themselves that weekend. 28 minutes, 58 seconds.

Jews in Alabama, Episode #40

We return to "normal programming" after our two-part anniversary show. We discuss an interesting bris here in Birmingham, featuring a mohelet!! We talk a little about Holy Joe Lieberman, and about the Birmingham community's response to the Israel/Hezbollah ceasefire. Our police chief blames Birmingham's increased homicide rate on the devil; while in Florida, Katherine Harris says non-Christian politicians are legislating sin; and in New York, Jackie Mason sues Jews for Jesus. We mention our parade of visitors, our wedding anniversary, and our recent trip to the beach, including a visit to the famous Flora-Bama. All in all, 38 minutes, 40 seconds of JIA? goodness.
