Jews in Alabama, Episode #4

Home from vacation, we run into a small GarageBand issue but still manage to get this podcast done (though not posted!) before midnight. Shout-outs, disengagement talk, other Alabama Jewish communities, John Tesh, is Grandpa Simpson Jewish?? (36 minutes, 37 seconds).

I had to laugh- I played your podcast to escape a bit from everything disengagement. I'm pretty emotionally spent. You can tell the mother of the soldier that things are going along well and no one has been hurt. She can be proud of her son. They are doing a terrific job in the face of sometimes verbal abuse. At least the rest of the show was a good escape. See you in Israel Raya!

LOL, sorry Carol. I'm sure you guys are a little overwhelmed with disengagement news and chatter. I just couldn't let it go by without saying something. The IDF soldiers are doing tremendous, heart-breaking work and I'm really proud of them.

Fun show. Oh. I just remembered this and it's not crypto-Jewish but still telling. At the Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim there is a little movie where Whoopie Goldberg is Calafia, the spirit of California. And she narrates as the movie portrays all the different people that have made Calfornia's history. The Indians, Spanish missionaries, Chinese/Japanese immigrants, etc. Except when they talk about people like Mayer starting Hollywood, it's not Jews, it's "Immigrants from Eastern Europe." And on the Disney Channel show "Lizzie McGuire," (hey, my daughter liked to watch it a couple years ago) had an episode where the obviously Jewish guy's grandma makes something like blintzes and when the kids eat it, they refer to how good "Eastern European" cooking is.

Anyway, Shalom Out.

Lee-- Guess all Jews have been replaced by "Eastern Europeans." Interesting stuff.

Michele-- Thanks for listening, and commenting. I've just subscribed to YJN and will listen to episode 2 sometime today! :)

Raya and Eric

Keep up the good work. I;ve been enjoying your podcasts since I heard about them from Carol on Israelisms.

I do find it a bit disconcerting to listen as my wife's name is Rya, and it is pronounced the same way that you (Raya, not Eric;-)) do.

Here's an idea for a future podcast. Your discussion of Shalom Y'All brought to mind some memories. I had a great uncle and great aunt, and cousins from a small town in Virginia, where there were only 10 or 12 Jewish families. They sure weren't like us Northerners. Yet, I couldn't wait for them to come for the holidays, especially Pesach. My great aunt cooked with my grandmother. It was wonderful. It would be interesting to interview Jews from really small town Alabama or elsewhere in the south, even if they now live in places like Birmingham.

During episode 4, one of you talked about something that got Raya to say "knock on wood". Do you know that the origin of that is to touch a relic of the cross (yes that one) for good luck. It is a saying that many Jews avoid.

And Raya, try and visit Carol and Charley when in Israel. You can be a guest on their show. My daughter, Beth from Oak Park, was on Israelisms 21.

Sorry for the long post but had a lot to say.

Hi Alan (and Rya) from Oak Park! I assume you're in the suburb of Chicago -- I lived in Lisle for 5 years growing up. What a cool coincidence about your wife's name -- with her spelling, people probably pronounce it correctly! :)

Yes, I've heard about the possible cross connection for "knock on wood." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knocking_on_wood for a good explanation, which makes me feel better about using the expression!

Eric says he heard your daughter on Israelisms and enjoyed it! :)

Hi Steve! Thanks for listening, and writing. I'm listening to the latest SG Show right now and loving it! :)

Thanks for the link about "touching wood". I also checked out one of the Simpsons and Torah sites. Great stuff. I can't wait to forward them to friends.

And yes, we are in the suburbs - Oak Park...just over the city border.
