From 2005-2007, this podcast was hosted by a "nice Jewish couple" (and their baby girl!) living in the buckle of the Bible Belt. Eric and Raya talked about married life, Sophie Arielle, the Simpsons, Judaism, and anything else which wandered across their brains.

Jews in Alabama, Episode #24
Another long distance show. Raya's in Washington for the NAAJY conference, Eric's back home. We talk about Raya's conference, Eric's 32nd birthday, and our upcoming cruise!! (30 minutes, 29 seconds.)
LOL!!! If you would ask this, you obviously haven't listened to the show!!! The last thing in the world I would EVER, EVER do is encourage Republican behavior!!
I don't know how non-Orthodox Jews can be Republicans, with the way the Republican party in the US is dominated by evangelical Christians. Quite frankly, Jews who vote Repugnican make me sick.
Thanks for writing!! We can talk a little bit more about this on the next show....but there are roughly 5000 Jews in all of Alabama, a state with around 4.5 million people.
In the Birmingham metro area (around a million people), I believe there are around 3000 Jews. We have three shuls and a Chabad House, plus a large Jewish Community Center, a Jewish Day School, Family Services, and Federation.
We do not have any kosher restaurants or butchers, except for the summer-only snack bar at the JCC. However, you can find pre-packaged kosher meat in some of our groceries, particularly those located in the more Jewish sections of town.
